Big-boat ability, small-boat handling
The Archer boats exist because plenty of people want to make long passages without taking on a twenty-metre yacht to do it. Ted Hood's “Whale Back” hull is how they manage it — beam carried high and well forward, so the interior volume is far greater than the length suggests.
Both models take a single 230 hp diesel on a shaft drive — a John Deere in the 38, a Cummins in the 42 — cruise at 8 knots and top out at 11. Two cabins, two heads, timber joinery and teak and holly floors. They are certified CE Category B rather than A — the honest limit for boats this size, and more than enough for the Adriatic, the Mediterranean and the coastal Atlantic.
