The State of Stabilisers

An overview of fin stabilisers on Selene trawlers and why electric systems are now specified on most models under 78 feet. Covers efficiency, maintenance and reduced crew workload.

As the name implies, boat stabilisers are systems that reduce a boat’s rolling motion from waves, wind, and currents. Considering that they increase both the safety and comfort of a crew—especially in rough seas, they’ve become standard equipment on most ocean-going vessels, including all Selene trawlers.

While there are several types of stabilisers, Selene uses fin-type stabilisers due to their effectiveness and dependability. Fin stabilisers work much like the fins on a fish, moving up and down to create the hydrodynamic lift that counteracts a boat’s rocking – whether the vessel is anchored or in motion.

In the video below, Dylan and Raffa discuss the advantages of electric stabilisers over their hydraulic counterpart, the unique relationship between CMC and Selene, and why most Selene yachts under 78 feet are now fitted with the CMC Stabilis Electra stabiliser system.

Other topics covered in the video include:

  • Recent developments in electric stabiliser technology
  • Energy efficiency of today’s stabilisers
  • How new technologies make it easier to cruise without extra crew
  • Stabilisers and rudder auxiliary steering
  • Fin maintenance and ease of repairs/replacement
